Punch? Punch!
In this project, I was given the character: Mr Punch. I designed an artists' book and a ceramic for this character. As poet Stéphane Mallarmé said, "poems are not made out of ideas. They're made out of words." I not only focus on the cover and content of the book but also consider the book format as a whole design. I hope to integrate and balance the relationship between book form and content to present an unknown Mr Punch.
The final work has five pages for each section, and the last page is across all four sections at the bottom. The book shape is an isosceles right triangle with perpendicular sides 18 cm in length, and each small square is 12cm*12cm. There are also arrows on the four inside small covers that lead the audience to the correct reading sequence.
Back Story: Mr Punch is a famous puppet character who has hundreds of years of history. He is the main character in Punch and Judy Show. In most people's mind, Mr Punch is a violent, prickly and stupid puppet. He killed his wife, his baby and many others, so he became a famous villain. However, people never think there might be some reasons why he did this. Maybe it is because people find some of his secrets and laughed at him. He felt that everyone was bullying him and hurting him. He felt so lonely that no one could really understand him. So that he began to retaliate frantically, hurting others with his slapstick.
